From Varamin to Honolulu: The Displacement, Commodification, and Aestheticization of the Emamzadeh Yahya’s Luster Mihrab, 1863–2025
Keelan Overton and Hossein Nakhaei
The Visual Timeline
The history of the Emamzadeh Yahya’s mihrab over the last 162 years presents an illuminating case study in the documentation, possession, and perception of Iranian cultural heritage from the mid-nineteenth century until the present day. This timeline synthesizes this complex history through 105 thumbnails, each of which combines a representative image with a short text. Our visual curation prioritizes three elements: the individuals who shaped the mihrab’s trajectories; the mihrab itself, which has experienced profound physical transformation; and the archives that have enabled these stories to be told.
This 20-minute read serves as a digestible and dynamic visual complement to the repository of facts presented in the main essay. Clicking on any thumbnail leads into the essay, where the topic is covered in detail and captions are provided.
